Believe it or not, you can put a credit card or driver’s license through a ScanSnap, then attach the credit card scan to a secure note in LastPass. The ScanSnap can handle business cards and receipts. It’s configured so the only step I take with each scan is to type in a meaningful file name.

That allows them to be indexed by Windows so the full text can be searched later. The scanner does optical character recognition (OCR) on the files automatically. It automatically straightens scans if they are pulled through slightly off center. It recognizes paper orientation so scans are always right side up. The feeder is very reliable and does some interesting tricks to make sure it doesn’t pull two sheets through together. It chooses black & white or color automatically. If one side is blank, it’s automatically dropped – no need to choose one-sided or two-sided scanning ahead of time. (It’s scanning both sides so technically it’s 50 pages per minute.) There is zero delay after pushing the button before scanning begins and zero delay between pages.
When I put a stack of pages into my ScanSnap, it pulls them through at 25 pages per minute. Typically it sits on the desk and is connected to a desktop computer with a USB cable. The desktop scanner in the above picture measures less than twelve inches across. It was designed so well that it is almost unchanged today, and it continues to be the best choice for home and small business use. The Fujitsu iX500 was introduced almost eight years ago. You should have one on the desk of every employee who deals with paper. However, for small business owners and people who work from home, the Snap Scan is an investment that can save time, space, and stress.Fujitsu has made the best small business scanner for many years. The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 is an outstanding scanner, but at over $400 it’s not for everyone.
It just does the scanning, but it does it very well. If you were hoping to get a fax machine and printer with this product, forget it. The technology on this scanner is as advanced as it gets, but no special training is required.

The software captures both sides of the card and can automatically extract information from the card to make an editable contact for export to programs including Excel, Outlook Express, and Salesforce. The Snap Scan imports each card, using Card Minder. For those cards, you can stack 10 at a time in the holder. The client usually wants to keep them, but it is not realistic to think they are ever going to go through them again. When we are working with a client on their home office one of the major challenges we encounter are business cards, lots and lots of business cards.

The software is a seamless hybrid between mac and pc. The software and scanner can convert a contract into Word and then back into a pdf, which gives your documents tremendous versatility. This product is perfect for our clients with home based businesses in finance, real estate, law, or any business with lots of contracts. If you’ve got stacks of paper, the Snap Scan can handle it. The Fujutsu Scan Snap iX500, however, will. My second thought is that, for what’s left, your standard flatbed scanner is not going to cut it. Our clients often ask, “Shouldn’t I just scan everything and go paperless?” My first thought is that there is probably a lot of paper that should be purged first.
